Show & Tell day at Kelli's

Show and Tell

This is a beautiful plate which I was able to recently add to my collection of Cottage china. I think I was programmed at an early age, as I am just an absolute sucker for the words "Cottage", "Farmhouse", "Country" . . . Show me a Helen Allingham picture and I go weak at the knees. When I was about 8 years old, I was given a lovely country cottage jigsaw puzzle. It showed an old thatched cottage, with a woman in a blue dress leaning out of an open window. An old man worked in the garden, and a little girl was on the cobbled path. There was a birch tree behind the cottage. I still have it, minus one or two pieces sadly. I think the Hollyhocks are the essential ingredient, and the thatched cottage . . . sometimes a lady in a crinoline too!

This piece I found - as usual - at a Car Boot Sale, and because it had a tiny chip on the bottom, it only cost £1. It stands at the back of the hall on the top of an old oak cupboard, next to the Uncle Tom Cobley set I showed you last week. On display upstairs, I have a little jug and a lovely vegetable dish in the same pattern, and I'm always on the look-out for more.

Darling china! I love hollyhocks - nothing says cottage to me like hollyhocks do.

Awwwwww, too bad you didn't have the foresight to glue you first puzzle and frame it!!! [I did one of mine when I was a kid, and had it for years...I was so proud of the 'finished' picture. Hehehehe] The plate is pretty.

Happy weekend. My show n tell is shared, I hope you can drop by sometime!!

It's absolutely beautiful! You say a car boot sale--is that as it sounds--a person selling from their car? Do they gather together in one spot or just here and there? Here we have yard or garage sales and people set up things in their yards for sale. I think it's neat to learn how others do similar things, but differently. Great share--thank you!

Cathy :)

I love it. When you say cottage china, is it just anything with a cottage or what? Dumb question?
Hey, the hollyhocks are the best.

Very lovely! I can relate to your affinity for all things "country" or "cottage." How can you resist?? I look forward to seeing more of your collection. ;o)

WOW! I had 100 visitors yesterday! Thankyou everyone for calling, and for reading beyond the Show & Tell as well.

hootin' anni - I did that jigsaw probably a hundred times and got so much pleasure from it that a couple of lost pieces haven't dimmed that pleasure yet! Would you believe I found three prints at auction which MUST be by the same artist that the jigsaw print was by? And no-one else wanted them . . . They now hang in my guest bedroom.

Nancy - "cottage" to me is anything with a cottage on it, although I do have some cottage-shaped pieces too (had better show some of those next week).

Cathy - Here in Britain, a Car Boot Sale is advertised at a set place and time, and folks just turn up. They - traditionally - use wallpaper pasting tables (which often sag in the middle!) The gathering can be anything from a dozen or so cars to several THOUSAND at the ones which are held every week. The ones I go to locally might have anything from between 25 cars/vans (when the weather is bad and it's under cover (no-one else would fit in) to a hundred or so cars. It's a
terrible addiction : )

I'm a late visitor but here I am. I too enjoy country, farm, cottage and your lovely plate I've seen car boot sales on BBC. Interesting.
