Last night I put the finishing touches to the lined knitted squares lap quilt I hastily sewed together over the past couple of days. Our eldest daughter is absolutely freezing up in her Uni house (even with the heating on) and so the squares we had knitted with the intention of turning into a bed throw, hastily got sewn together for a winter warmer instead. OK, the initial squares are smaller than the later ones - mainly as I'd put the bag away and when I felt in a knitting mood before Christmas, just sized it from - bad - memory, but it is warm and it's not as though it's being entered for a show. I lined it with some leftover quilt batting, and then backed it with some more of the flanelette sheeting I had left over from backing the heavy curtain for the front door (that stuff really is earning its keep).
Now - another dish cloth to start on today, and casting on for a knitted hat for my son, plus some more piecing on the two quilts I'm working on.
I used some pretty buttons to tie the layers together.
I love these knitted dish cloths that seem to be so popular atthe moment!

We have had 39 degrees here today so no blankets needed here...Ugh!

What a lovely idea BB ... your daughter will not only be warm and cosy at Uni, but will also have a lovely reminder of home while she's studying! Gosh, I can remember the days of studying with fingerless gloves on because my bedroom got so cold!

Pamela - I had some left-over quilt batting which went in the middle of the "sandwich" and then backed it with left-over flannelet sheeting a friend had given me. The buttons hold the layers together, but I have just used tufts of wool on some of my bed quilts.
ReplyDeleteEveryone - thanks for the compliments. It really was SO cosy, I am tempted to start knitting more squares and make one for me now! Half way through another dishcloth with a hearts pattern - really pretty.
Mmmmm, that warmer {or 'throw,' as we call them} looks lovely and warm!!! I'm sure your eldest daughter will get lots of use out of it.

The knitted lap quilt is lovely, and you have inspired me, I've been knitting squares initially intended for a lap blanket, but I found the childrens little cot quilt today from when they were little, so I think I'm going to combine the two and make a little knitted lap quilt.

Yup Sandy - love crochet, but the purple project from the summer is on hold at the moment and I have my Knitting and Quilting Head on (bit like Worzel Gummidge!)
ReplyDeleteDaisy - have fun with your lap quilt. I wasn't going to line mine, as the need was great, but glad I did as it doubled the warmth factor.
Aunt Amelia - the blog name comes from the country name for the Greater Willow Herb - the flower in my blog heading - seen there growing wild in my garden. It is so pretty I forgive it for growing where it is NOT meant to be.
Codlins are also apples, which have a signature shape - it's an old country name, and codlins and cream would have been stewed apples with cream . . . There is even something called a Codlin Moth, which attacks apple trees.
